Chandrika’s Security Head Jailed

The head of security of former president Chandrika Bandaranayake Kumaratunge, SSP Nihal Karunarathne was yesterday sentenced to a four year jail term and was fined Rs 50,000 by the Kandy High Court Judge Preethi Padman Surasena. The judge ordered that Karunaratne be jailed for a further one year in the event of his failure to pay the fine.

 

 

He was found guilty of threatening former Hanguranketha OIC IP R. H. M. Gunaratne Banda with death at the Poramadulla Vidyalaya school grounds on 20th November 2001. State Counsel Gihan Kulatunga said that the accused be punished in a way to set an example to senior law enforcement officers.
